This article lists six things that parents can do to cultivate a love of reading in children.
In the article titled, “Why Reading is So Important for Children," Barbara Freedman says, “. . . books can encourage children to be more cooperative, to share with others, to be kind to animals, or to respect the natural environment.” But just like any other area of kids' development, a love of literature in must be cultivated to flourish. The following lists six things that parents can do to raise readers.
Read Aloud to Children as Often as Possible
Reading aloud to children can increase their vocabulary, stimulate their imagination, enhance problem solving abilities, increase self-esteem, and improve language skills. It is also one of the most effective ways to raise children who love to read.
Because the library allows access to an endless amount of books, and magazines -- it’s a great place to nourish and encourage a love of reading in children.
Parents should use every opportunity to take advantage of the many services the library has to offer, including scheduled story hours for children -- which can be beneficial if they are used in conjunction with reading sessions at home.
Having a large supply of books that are easily accessible to children will encourage them to spend more time reading.
To minimize the expense associated with purchasing books, visit yard sales, library book sales, and thrift stores to see what’s available. It's also a good idea to talk to friends and family members about your preference to have your kids receive books for birthdays and holidays instead of toys.
It’s okay to let children make some of their own book choices. Not only does this encourage the development of thinking and reasoning abilities, it also lets them know that you value their interests and opinions.
Books are not the only way for children to engage in reading. Age-appropriate magazines such as Highlights for Children, Cobblestone, Ladybug, and National Geographic World can enhance children’s love of literature by providing stimulating stories, activities, and games.
Kids learn what they live. So it’s imperative that parents demonstrate how much literature is valued in the home. In other words, lead by example. When parents engage in reading on a regular basis it encourages children to embrace reading as a part of their daily lives.
When parents raise readers, they are ultimately giving kids the key to a richer, fuller life, and a gift that will last a lifetime.
